How to Calculate Days Between Two Dates

To find the number of days between two dates, subtract the earlier date from the later date. The formula is:

Days Between = End Date − Start Date

For example, from January 1 to March 31 is 89 days (in a non-leap year).

Calendar Days vs. Business Days

Calendar days include all days: Monday through Sunday. This is the standard way to count days between dates for personal, legal, and most business uses.

Business days count only weekdays (Monday–Friday). Use business days for work deadlines, payment terms, and shipping estimates.

Common Use Cases

  • Contract deadlines — Count days remaining before a contract expires
  • Project planning — Find the duration of a project phase
  • Age verification — Check how old someone is in days
  • Shipping estimates — Calculate delivery windows
  • Event planning — How many days until a wedding, vacation, or deadline
